REMINISCENCES OF A SOLDIER: 95 NOT OUT

This is a true story.

I had recorded it in my Voice Activated System. This is the story of a self made man who was born in a forlorn & desolate village in Almora District. He grew up with all the Sanskars, ethics  & Values from the illustrious 'Joshi Khandan'.His story is the  story of sheer hard work, focus, singleness of purpose,  grit, courage & determination. His core values of honesty, credibility & integrity are for every one to emulate. His case study is unique.Indeed it is a profile of hard work, courage, leadership ,camaraderie, & bonhomie.

"We had a lot of land.It was my bad luck that I lost my parents when I was pretty young. This was probably the reason that my Grandfather did not like me at all.It was my Granny,Nani ,Chachi & my Bua who  brought me up respectively. My father was Manager of an Estate & it was there that he got remarried on his own.Since it was not an arranged marriage & was not approved by my Grandfather & the  village community,he left his job & went down to Bhabhar. There he purchased 200 Buffaloes. These were known as 'Bagulas' & we supplied milk to the nearby dairy run by a Bania. He made 'Khoya' out of it.In those days  one rupee could fetch you 25 seers of milk.It was here that I started my basic education.

I and father were summoned to the village by my Grandfather & it was decided that I should undergo my 'Yagyopaweet Sanskar'.Lot of my relatives & people from nearby villages assembled at Bhabhar. It was solemnized with great pomp & show. After the ceremonies,I returned to the village. My Bua took me to her place in Almora. Her husband had a flourishing Ghee business. She loved me from the core of her heart.

I was now about 15 years old. I was not studying & my Bua also did not insist upon my joining the local school. Those were different days. There was no stress on education. The requirements were meagre. It was a heavenly bondage.

One day while roaming around the Bright End Corner,I happened to meet  Rai Bahadur Tamta who had taken the contract to make the roads in Almora Cantonment. He took an immediate liking for me & entrusted me with the job of a 'Munshi'.My daily pay was 4 Annas.I was also the Store Holder. The labour class was paid 2 Annas per day.

In the meantime, some US Missionaries came to Almora. They settled down across Pokharkhali -exactly where the present ITI is located. There was an American lady-a Doctor who took an instant liking for me & I became her Man Friday.I used to visit Bazaar; buy articles for her daily need;get her letters from the Post Office;take her letters to the Post Office, get her laundry items, etc. She took me out whenever she visited nearby villages. She was a specialist in Chest Diseases.

People of Almora were scared to go that side. There were two reasons.First, that one shall be converted into Christianity &,second, you were bound to contract TB.I was paid Rs 15 per month. She was extremely happy by my work & the Missionaries wanted me to accompany them to U.S.They said that they would educate me & take my entire responsibility.

My Grand father & the Village community did not permit it."
